ASUU At It Again With FG Over Half Salary
University Lecturers through their union ASUU are at loggerhead with the Federal Government of Nigeria The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has stated that the government will not pay professors’ full wages despite their continuous statewide protest. This suggests that the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities are gearing up for another confrontation. After the Federal Government failed to pay them for the eight-month period the lecturers were on strike, ASUU had started rallies on Monday in several cities throughout the nation to emphasise their demand for full compensation. Adamu emphasised that the academics who were protesting would not be paid for work that was not completed in accordance with the “No work, no pay” policy when speaking with State House media in Abuja on Wednesday. The minister also addressed the claim made by Professor Emmanuel Osodoke, President of ASUU, that paying academics on a pro-rata basis was a ruse to turn them into casual employees. Nobody may hire university professors as hourly labour, he declared. Adamu said he was unaware that the academics were contemplating a one-day strike in response to the government’s decision.
