An optician has verified that Sidney de Carvalho Mesquita can force his eyes 1.8 cm out of their sockets with his facial muscles. The Brazilian, who was just nine years old when he learned about his peculiar biological condition, has always adored wowing his loved ones with his amazing gift. But Mr. Mesquita did not formally register the skill until this year. On January 10, 2022, an optometrist in Sao Paulo, Brazil, certified his record by employing a proptometer to measure the protrusion of his eyes. He smashed the 1.2 cm mark set in 2007 according to Guinness World Records. Mr. Mesquita claimed he had never experienced “such much euphoria, pure exhilaration coupled with elation and ecstasy” upon learning of the record-breaking news. When Sidney pops his eyes while impersonating Uncle Fester from The Addams Family, he temporarily loses eyesight and describes the experience as “letting go of part of my body.” Since then, he has been able to make use of his peculiar gift in both personal and professional contexts.
