U.S Lawmakers To Ban TikTok In The Country

United State lawmakers just recently introduced a bill to ban short-form video app called TikTok from operating in the country New legislation that seeks to prohibit TikTok from functioning in the US has been proposed by some US lawmakers. The latest action by US politicians to target the Chinese-owned short-form video app is reflected in the new measure introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio, the senior Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and a bipartisan pair of congressman in the House. According to certain sources, TikTok is unable to protect the data of US users from the Chinese authorities. According to legislation that was put forth on Tuesday, December 13, social media companies with at least one million monthly users who are based in, or who are “substantially influenced” by, nations that are regarded as foreign enemies, such as China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela, would be “blocked and prohibited from conducting any transactions” in the United States. These nations include China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela. TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, are expressly mentioned in the bill as social media firms subject to the regulations. The measure was passed at the same time that a number of states, led by Republican governors, passed state-level limitations on the use of TikTok on equipment used by the public sector. TikTok has been in talks with the US government for years about a possible agreement that may allow the business to solve national security issues while still providing services to US consumers. DSS Gives 48-hours Ultimatum To Petrol Dealers Over Fuel Scarcity

Fuel scarcity in Nigeria just took another turn with DSS giving ultimatum to petrol marketers to resolve and return to normalcy The Department of State Services, or DSS, yesterday gave all parties involved in the fuel supply chain a 48-hour deadline to resume supplying petroleum products at the officially approved rate across the nation, or prepare to bear the consequences of their actions. This move was apparently made in response to the country’s continuing gasoline shortage. The DSS issued a warning that anyone discovered to be sabotaging the nation’s supply of petroleum products after the deadline had passed would be viewed as a danger to national security and subject to legal repercussions. This was the conclusion reached during a strategic discussion held on Thursday at the DSS headquarters in Abuja with the Nigerian National Petroleum corporation Limited, big marketers, depot owners, tanker drivers, and individual marketers. Dr. Peter Afunanya, the DSS spokesman, addressed the media after the meeting and stated: “We were clear and direct in telling the stakeholders in the fuel distribution system that enough is enough and that whatever is causing the country’s lack of petroleum products must be resolved immediately as Nigerians have the right to see and purchase fuel at the official price at all times. The NNPCL and all parties involved agree that there is enough fuel in the depots across Nigeria, and we also made it clear to them that the government will no longer tolerate any form of scarcity, adding that those who may want to doubt our involvement in the matter should note that it touches on our core values. We issued a stern warning to everyone involved, saying that the petroleum supply system would no longer operate as normal and that anybody found to be impeding the distribution of fuel would be subject to the full force of the law and regarded as an enemy of Nigeria. “That moving ahead, the DSS is to conduct operations throughout the nation to deal ruthlessly with anyone preventing the delivery of petroleum products to Nigerians at the authorized official rate. Our primary role is to identify and stop threats to national security, but we also have the duty to look into national crimes and economic sabotage, and if that is proven, we will act accordingly, We will make every effort to find individuals responsible and deal with them in line with Nigerian law....

Aisha Buhari To Testify Against Student Over Tweet

First Lady of Nigeria, Madam Aisha Buhari to testify against student over viral body shaming tweet It has been heard that Aisha Buhari, the president’s wife, would testify against Aminu Mohammed, a student at the Federal University of Dutse Jigawa, who criticised her on Twitter. On November 30, news outlets reported that the aforementioned student had been remanded in custody after being charged with cyberstalking and defaming the First Lady before the FCT High Court No. 14 in Abuja on Tuesday. Mohammed, while entering a not guilty plea, was still detained at the Suleja Correctional Facility without the chance to post bail. The 24-year-old, who is from Bauchi State, was purportedly detained a few days ago on the First Lady’s instructions, which infuriated Nigerians and led to many of them appealing for his release. Back in June, he had tweeted in Hausa that the First Lady was becoming fat off the money of the underprivileged. Su mama Anchi Kudin Talakawa a koshi, which translates to “Mama has eaten fat on poor people’s money,” was the tweet’s first line. The 500-level student was allegedly brutalised, assaulted, mistreated, and humiliated by police officers who were thought to be personnel from the Department of State Services when they picked him up from his school two weeks ago and took him immediately to the Presidential Villa. Aisha is one of five witnesses gathered by the prosecution to testify against Mohammed in court, according to material that has just become accessible. The police claim that the act touching on defamation and cyberstalking violated Section 391 of the Penal Code. Court Sentences Inspector General Of Police To Prison

Court has sentenced the inspector general of police in Nigeria to prison for three months Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), was given a three-month jail term for defying a court order by Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Justice Olajuwon gave the decision in response to a lawsuit brought by Patrick Okoli, a former police officer, who claimed he was forcibly and illegally retired from the Nigeria Police Force. The affidavits used to support the lawsuit state that the applicant (Okoli) was forced to resign in June 1992. On February 19, 1994, a Bauchi High Court rendered a decision in favour of the petitioner and revoked the letter of obligatory retirement after he challenged his forced retirement. The petitioner must be reinstated with full rights and benefits, the supreme court said. In a letter dated October 13, 2004, the Police Service Commission (PSC) instructed the then-IGP to restore the applicant and make a recommendation for promotion in compliance with the court’s ruling. In order to compel the implementation of the Bauchi High Court’s ruling and the PSC’s instructions, Okoli filed a lawsuit at the Abuja Federal High Court with the case number FHC/ABJ/CS/637/2009. On October 21, 2011, the Federal High Court in Abuja rendered a decision in the applicant’s favour. The court’s decision was challenged by the IGP office, but the appeal was denied. In order to further enforce the order, the applicant wrote to the IGP’s office and approached the Federal House of Representatives. The applicant requested the Festus Keyamo legal firm to begin a committal procedure against the respondent after all other attempts to do so had failed. Olajuwon, who gave the ruling, said that the IGP should be brought to jail and imprisoned there for three months, or until he complies with the order. The main law enforcement has purposefully chosen not to follow the same legislation, which is disappointing, the court stated.  It is crucial to stress that adhering to court rulings is essential for maintaining a country’s good order, peace, and stability, the judge said.
