Actress Remanded In Prison For Spraying New Naira In Party
A Nigerian Actress in trouble and been remanded in prison for spraying and stepping on the new redesigned Naira notes at a party
On Monday, February 13, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos ruled that Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, a Nollywood actress who had been detained for tampering with the new Naira notes, be held in Kirikiri awaiting the outcome of her bail plea.
On February 1, 2023, near Awolowo Road in Ikoyi, Lagos, Omoseyin was detained by agents of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Fraud Related Offences Commission, or ICPC. He was then turned over to the EFCC for further investigation.
Following the internet publication of a video showing the 31-year-old splashing and trampling the freshly redesigned Naira notes at a party, the woman was taken into custody.
She stated in her testimony to the Commission that she was given the fresh Naira notes during the celebration by her followers and that she was unfamiliar with the donors of the funds.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) presented a two-count accusation against Omoseyin at her arraignment before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke.
The count for one item reads,
That on January 28, 2023, while dancing at the Monarch Event Center in Lekki, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, you Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin tampered with the sum of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying it there, and you did so in violation of and in violation of section 21 (1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.

That on January 28, 2023, while dancing at a social gathering at the Monarch Event Center in Lekki, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, you Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin tampered with the amount of N100,000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) given by CBN
By dancing on such surface on the aforementioned occasion, you violated section 21 (1) of the Central Bank Act of 2007, which is punishable by law.
Omoseyin entered a not guilty plea after having the accusations read to her.
In light of the defendant’s plea, the prosecution’s attorney, S.I. Sulaiman, requested a trial date from the court and called for the defendant to be lodged in the proper jail or prison.
In response, the defendant’s attorney, Adenike Goncalves, asked the court to grant bail to the defendant until the matter was heard and decided.
Additionally, she pleaded that her client would be held in EFCC custody until the court approved bail and the conditions were fully satisfied.
Sulaiman argued that the court’s decision about bail is final, but he requested that if it were to be granted, the terms of the bail term would allow the defendant to attend the trial.
Justice Aneke remanded the defendant to Kirikiri Correctional Facility and postponed the decision on the bail application to Wednesday, February 15, 2023.
