Another attack has happened in Enugu as unidentified gunmen stormed INEC office to destroy voting materials
On Sunday, January 15, unidentified gunmen stormed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Enugu South Local Government Area, killing one police officer.
According to a statement issued by INEC National Commissioner Festus Okoye, the resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State, Dr. Chukwuemeka J. Chukwu, the commission’s office in Enugu South Local Government Area was assaulted by unknown gunmen at around 9.12pm on Sunday.
“The security gatehouse was demolished.
Fortunately, the assailants were unable to gain entrance to the main building due to the quick response of Police and Army officers from the 82 Division.
The State Commissioner of Police and the REC arrived on the spot as soon as they received word of the incident.
“Of the two police officers assigned to protect the facility, one died, while the other was injured and is being treated,” he added.
Security authorities are investigating the event, according to Okoye.
“Meanwhile, the demolished gatehouse will be repaired, and the Commission will continue with its preparations for the 2023 General Election in Enugu State and throughout the country,” Okoye stated.
