A young jobless man has been sent to 9 months in prison for stealing two goats in Jos

A local court in Jos, Plateau state, condemned Pius John, a 20-year-old unemployed man, to nine months in jail for stealing two goats.

The complainant, Mr. Dung Gyang, reported the matter to the Anglo-Jos Police station on October 11 according to police prosecution counsel, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, who testified in court.

The defendant broke into the complainant’s home, the prosecutor claims, and stole two goats valued N40,000.

The prosecutor claimed that the requirements of sections 334 and 272 of the Plateau Penal Code apply to the offense.

A panel of two magistrates, Adam Sadiq and Hyacinth Dolnaan, rendered a verdict in the case and condemned John to nine months in jail and a N10,000 fine.

Additionally, the prisoner was mandated to provide the complaint an N40,000 compensation. 

According to the judges, individuals who would desire to commit such crimes would be discouraged by the sentence.
