A new Tory leadership election will be held once Liz Truss announces her resignation as prime minister, and it will be decided “within the next week.”

Ms. Truss stated in a speech outside 10 Downing Street that she had realised she “cannot achieve the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”

“I have consequently informed His Majesty The King that I am retiring as the head of the Conservative Party,” she added.

“I saw Sir Graham Brady, the 1922 Committee’s chairman, this morning.

We’ve decided that the following week will see the conclusion of the leadership election.

This will guarantee that we stay on track to carry out our fiscal objectives and uphold the economic stability and security of our nation.

Until a replacement is selected, I shall serve as prime minister.

In response to Ms. Truss’s resignation, Sir Keir Starmer reiterated his call for a snap election, stating that “the British public deserve a genuine voice on the country’s destiny.”

Elections have also been called by the SNP and Lib Dems.
