On Tuesday, September 6, a canoe accident in the Guri Local Government Area in Jigawa state claimed the lives of a 7-month-old infant, four mothers, and four other people.
In a statement issued on September 7th, DSP Lawan Shiisu, the state police public relations officer (PPRO), verified the occurrence.
Shiisu claims that it occurred at around six o'clock.
“On Tuesday, at about 6pm., information at our disposal revealed that on the same date at about 4:30pm, four women and a child boarded a canoe from Nguru Yobe State to Adiyani village in Guri LGA of Jigawa State.
Unfortunately, the canoe capsized close to their destination. The driver managed to escape alive, while the passengers drowned,” Shiisu said
Shiisu continued by saying that local divers in the area sprang into action right away to rescue the passengers and that they have since found the bodies.
Oneyaniwura Kasagama, 50; Lafiya Bulama, 40; Badejaka Kasagama, 40; Gimto Kasagama, 40; and Mai Madu Bulama, the infant of seven months, were the names he supplied for the deceased.
He claimed that the bodies had been transported to the Adiyani health center and had been given a doctor's death certificate.
